Colleton County Fire-Rescue

10/14/2008

At 16:17, Tuesday 14-October, Stations 5, 19 and 26 responded to a dwelling fire at 8458 Jefferies Highway. Engine 5 reported heavy smoke conditions on arrival, which quickly became heavy fire from the second story when the fire broke through a balcony door. During a walk around, the IC discovered heavy fire conditions on the first floor in an addition to the original structure. Two crews made coordinated attacks on the fire from the first floor at the rear of house and from the second floor balcony. The hundred year old wood frame structure presented several obstacles hindering efforts to extinguish the fire. Crews quickly knocked down the fire and prevented any additional spread, however the upstairs contained a large fire load and the two separate rear walls and roof attachments proved to be a stubborn adversary.

Firefighters spread salvage covers over furniture and items on the first floor which had not been damaged as crews pulled the ceiling to reach the hidden fire. After about 30 minutes the fire was declared under control as overhaul operations continued for another hour. The homeowners were outside at the time of the fire and were not injured. Investigators determined the fire cause to be unintentional, having originated in the utility room in a wall of the original
building.

Engine 5, Engine 19, Tender 5, Tender 19, Tender 26, Ladder 19, Medic 19, Battalion 1 and Truck 110 responded. Captain Tim Wojcik served as Incident Commander during the Fire Attack. He was relieved during overhaul by Lt. Scott Feather who remained on scene until the Investigation was completed.
