Colleton County Fire-Rescue

1/20/2009

Stations 1, 2 and 6 responded to a two vehicle MVC in approximately the 5400 block of ACE Basin Parkway (US Hwy. 17) Tuesday 20-January at 1034. Apparently a southbound Honda, driven by a 22 year old College of Charleston Police Officer, crossed the center line and ran head-on into a north bound Peterbilt Tractor Trailer. The small Honda sustained heavy damage, careening off of the truck and striking the southbound ditch bank. The driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was partially ejected, with his legs trapped in the wreckage and was not breathing when Medic 6 and Engine 6 arrived. The truck, which had its front axle knocked off from the impact, lost control, entered the southbound ditch taking down a utility pole and power lines before striking several trees. The truck driver received minor injuries and was transported to Colleton Medical Center for evaluation.  The Coroner's Office transported the police officer to the morgue.

Engine 6, Medic 6, Rescue 1, and Battalion 1 responded.  Assistant Chief David Greene served as Incident Commander.

This is fifth fatality involving four accidents in Colleton County in the past 21

days. None of the deceased were wearing seatbelts.
