Colleton County Fire-Rescue

2/6/2009

Stations 5, 17, 19 and 26 responded to multiple fires at 3234 Burlington Road in the Pleasant Grove Community at 1537, 6-January. The original fire was reported to have been a trash pile fire that got away from the landowner. Light winds quickly spread the fire into nearby broom straw, which rapidly ignited and spread to a nearby vacant mobile home and two vehicles. A thick column of black smoke could be seen seven miles away in Walterboro. Engine 19 arrived reporting a 50% involved singlewide mobile home, a fully involved pickup truck, with a second vehicle and two other mobile homes endangered. Approximately 1-1/2 acres of brush and woods were also on fire. As the brush fire grew a third mobile home became threatened. Engine 19 deployed two 1-3/4 handlines, while a third crew extended a booster line to work on the grass fire. One vehicle was saved, however it suffered heat damage to the paint and plastic parts on the passenger side. The pickup truck was completely destroyed and was easily knocked down with an 1-3/4 line. Crews used both handlines to work on the well involved mobile home. The vacant structure suffered extensive damage.

Engine 26 was positioned at the home next door and stopped the fire within 10 feet of the structure. Other firefighters used backpacks, water extinguishers and

rakes to contain the woods/grass fire until handlines could be freed up to completely extinguish the fires. The remaining mobile homes were spared. Firefighters remained on scene for two hours.

Engine 19, Engine 26, Tender 5, Tender 17, Tender 19, Medic 19, Truck 11, Truck 111 responded. Captain Scott Feather served as Incident Commander.
