Colleton County Fire-Rescue

2/9/2009

Stations 1, 19, 24, 26 and City of Walterboro Public Safety units responded to a house fire at 221 Lincoln Street at 2324, Monday evening 9-February. Engine 19 arrived to find heavy fire conditions in the rear of the structure with flames blowing out of two windows of a rear bedroom. Thick black smoke rolled into the street as firefighters made entry into the structure with one 1-3/4” handline. Crews found a rear bedroom well involved and were able to bring the fire under control within minutes. The fire had already burned through the ceiling and was beginning to spread into the attic, however interior crews were able to stop the extension and prevent any additional damage to the building. The remainder of the residence suffered moderate smoke and heat damage.

Firefighter-Paramedics treated an adult female who resided at the address for first degree burns to her head, face and neck. She was transported to Colleton Medical Center by Fire-Rescue Medic 27 for additional treatment. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it is apparent the fire originated in the bedroom. Firefighters were on the scene for 1-1/2 hours.

There was initially some confusion on the exact location of the home. Since it sat on the City Limit, both Colleton County Fire-Rescue and City of Walterboro Public Safety responded. The building was verified to be located in the county,

just outside the City Limit.

Engine 1, Engine 19, Tender 1, Tender 19, Tender 27, Medic 27, Rescue 1, Battalion 1 and City of Walterboro Engine 1, Engine 2 and Engine 3 responded. Battalion Chief Richard Sheffield served as Incident Commander.
