Colleton County Fire-Rescue

2/12/2009

Stations 1, 13, 19 and 27 responded to a high speed single car MVC on I-95 at the 47 mile marker southbound at 1620, Thursday 12-February. The accident occurred approximately ½ mile south of the Rest Area. Apparently the southbound Mercury Mountaineer suffered a blown rear tire, which caused the driver to lose control. The vehicle flipped over two times coming to rest on its roof at the wood line on the right shoulder. None of the occupants were wearing seatbelts. The adult female driver was ejected from the vehicle and was found between the roadway and the front of the small SUV. Two other adults and a seven year old boy were also injured. The child suffered minor injuries, but all of the adults received multiple traumatic injuries including broken necks on all three patients. An 80 year old female was the most severely injured and was stabilized on scene by Firefighter-Paramedics. She required intubation to secure her airway. The Meducare helicopter responded to the scene and landed on the Interstate. The woman was flown from the scene in critical condition to the Trauma Center at MUSC. Fire-Rescue transported the remaining three patients in Medic 19 and Medic 27 to Colleton Medical Center. The two adults were treated in Walterboro and later flown by helicopter to MUSC. The boy’s father came from Columbia and picked him at CMC.

Engine 1, Rescue 1, Medic 19, Medic 27, Battalion 1, Truck 116 and Truck 12 responded. Battalion Chief Richard Sheffield served as Incident Commander.
