Colleton County Fire-Rescue
2/22/2009
Woods fires and high winds
kept firefighters busy Sunday afternoon 22-February. The first of the
two largest fires was received at 1222 reporting a car fire at 840
Cromwell Lane. Engine 19 and Medic 19 arrived to find a fully involved
passenger car with a rapidly spreading woods fire endangering three
structures. The doublewide mobile home at the address received damage to
the vinyl siding on the “B” side, with the underpinning burned away.
Crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire around the home and
prevent additional damage. Driven by high winds, the fire rapidly
extended into an adjacent wooded area, burning easterly as well as to
the north. Engine 19 deployed one 1-3/4 handline and a booster line to
handle the car fire and protect a storage building, two mobile homes and
a garage on the adjacent property. Additional fire units were requested twice and a Forestry Tractor responded as the fire quickly advanced toward structures on Wasson Lane east of the original location. Firefighters used back packs, flaps and metal rakes to combat the flames that were unreachable by fire hoses. buildings and a two bay garage
using two 1-3/4 handlines and a booster line. Engine 9, Engine 5, Tender 9,
Tender 27 and Tender 17 protected homes onboth Firebird Lane and Wasson Lane
until the Forestry Tractor could cut a break around the 6 acre fire. The
Tenders served double duty protecting buildings and resupplying the Engines.
Firefighters and Forestry units were able to protect eight structures. Only
the mobile home on Cromwell Lane received fire damage. The car was
completely destroyed. The fire appears to have originated from a debris fire
from the previous day. Engine 5, Engine 9, Engine 19, Engine 26, Tender 9, Tender 17, Tender 27, Medic 19 and Battalion 1 responded. Engineer-EMT-I Chad Spell served as Incident Commander for the Cromwell Lane sector. Chief McRoy handled the Wasson Lane Sector.
