Colleton County Fire-Rescue

2/25/2009

Stations 1 and 19 responded to a fatal single crash in the 1000 block of Industrial Road, Wednesday evening at 2023. The eastbound car was estimated to be traveling over 100 mph, when it dropped off the right shoulder. The 36 year old driver over-corrected and went into the west bound ditch after sliding sideways. He struck a driveway culvert and began overturning. The car flipped over at least three times before coming to rest on its roof near a patch of woods. The driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was partially ejected through the sun roof and was pinned under the car. He received severe multiple traumatic injuries. He was pronounced DOA by Medic 19’s crew. The extrication did not begin until after the Coroner arrived on the scene.

Firefighters stabilized the car with cribbing and used a high lift jack to lift the car several inches to allow for the victims removal. Cribbing on the passenger side was adjusted several times to prevent additional damage to the patient. The Coroner’s Officer transported the body to Colleton Medical Center.

Engine 19, Rescue 1, Medic 19 and Battalion 1 responded. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the accident. Asst. Chief David Greene served as Incident Commander.
