Colleton County Fire-Rescue

8/25/2009

Stations 1, 12, 19, 24 and 27 responded to a large fire in a recycling yard located at 114 Geology Lane off of Sidneys Road Tuesday morning 25-August at 0100. A resident in a nearby subdivision on Redtail Court reported hearing several explosions and seeing a large fire through the woods in the direction of Geology Lane. Two motorists on Sidneys Road also reported seeing flames through the woods. Engine 19 arrived within minutes and found several large debris piles on fire, along with approximately 100 truck tires, several vehicles and a large piece of hydraulic equipment burning. The fire was endangering a 15 foot high stack of old LP tanks. Multiple handlines and a deck gun were deployed in attempts to control the large fire. A three inch line was stretched into the junkyard, then gated to two 1-3/4 handlines. Access to the fire was very limited due to the congestion in the junkyard. Engine 19’s deckgun was used to cool the stack of LP tanks in the event they still contained product. A K-12 circular saw was used to open a metal gate to gain access to the single lane driveway into the yard. Firefighters extinguished the hydraulic knuckle boom using handlines. ARFF 19 was brought to the scene to help combat the fire. With its two deck guns, foam and pump & roll capabilities, the vehicle proved to be very useful on this type of fire. The ARFF was able to get into the junkyard and spray large volumes of water and foam directly on the fire(s). The

other pumpers were positioned too far away for their decks to be effective. The ARFF had the fire knocked down in about 20 minutes, using three loads of water (4500 gallons). Firefighters then stretched handlines into the junkyard to work on the smoldering piles of debris, vehicles and tires.

The owner of the facility was located about 2 hours into the incident. He responded to the scene and used several pieces of heavy equipment to move the burned vehicles and disperse the smolder piles of debris to allow firefighters to  extinguish the seat of the fires. Water supply was accomplished with a tender shuttle, with units filling at a pressurized hydrant 1 mile from the scene. It was later determined someone had attempted to burglarize the facility. The fire was intentionally set. Firefighters were on the scene for a little over four hours. The Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crime.
