Colleton County Fire-Rescue

10/11/2009

Stations 1, 9 and 19 responded to an over-turned van on I-95 at the 52 mile marker northbound, Sunday evening at 1933. The northbound Chevrolet Astro Van apparently left the roadway in the median at a high rate of speed, over-corrected and crossed both lanes of traffic. The van lost control and began flipping end over end multiple times before coming to rest in the woods on the right hand side. The vehicle received heavy damage. The 30 year old driver was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected through the passenger side window during one of the rolls. He was thrown into the woods with the van coming to rest on top of him. Firefighters found the man under the back of the van. Several bystanders had stopped and were rendering aid. The patient was semi-conscious, in critical condition suffering multiple traumatic injuries with respiratory problems. Crews were able to extricate him from under the van, immobilized him, then safely move him to Medic 19. A medical helicopter was requested, but could not fly due to poor weather conditions. The man was having severe difficulty breathing, so he was rapidly transported to Colleton Medical Center to be stabilized. The ED staff did a wonderful job and worked on him for about 45 minutes, before Medic 19 transferred him to the Trauma

Center at MUSC in Charleston. Three Firefighter-Paramedics and an ED nurse conducted the transport, continuing efforts to stabilize the man while enroute. He was still in critical condition at the Trauma Center and undergoing emergency surgery last night. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.

Engine 1, Medic 9, Medic 19 and Battalion 1 responded. Asst. Chief David Greene served as Incident Commander.
