12/13/2009

Stations 1, 6, 19, 27 responded to a two vehicle MVC at the intersection of Green Pond Hwy and Ritter Road at 0928, Sunday morning 13-December. A Ford Pick-up Truck traveling southbound on Green Pond Hwy, collided with a west bound Suzuki Forenza, causing the pickup truck to leave the roadway and strike a tree head-on. The truck received heavy damage, trapping the driver. Two children riding in the cab also received traumatic injuries; one 10 year old male was critical. Two additional Medic units were dispatched to the scene and a medical helicopter was requested, but could not respond due to poor weather conditions. Both children were quickly extricated from the vehicle. The 10 year old male was unconscious and was rapidly transported by Medic 6 directly to the Pediatric Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston. The fifteen year old male was transported to Colleton Medical Center.

Firefighters used two sets of Holmatro Rescue tools to  remove the vehicle’s doors and roof. Hydraulic rams were then used to displace the dash. Firefighter-Paramedics treated the man while he was trapped including dual IVs and pain medications. It took approximately 50 minutes to extricate the man from the wreckage. He received severe injuries to his legs and was transported by

Medic 19 directly to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston. The intersection was closed to traffic for two hours.

Engine 19, Rescue 1, Medic 6, Medic 19, Medic 27, Battalion 1, Truck 11 and Car 17 responded. Battalion Chief Dan Barb served as Incident Commander.
