Colleton County Fire-Rescue

3/09/2010

Stations 2, 6 and 21 responded to a structure fire in the 2000 block of Bennetts Point Road Tuesday evening 9-March at 2051. Callers to 9-1-1 reported the house was well involved. On arrival in this remote area, Engine 6 noted the roof had already collapsed on the single story block structure. Engine 6 used a deck gun to knock down the heavy flames, then deployed two 1-3/4 hand lines to work the on the building and a booster line to extinguish an approximately ½ acre grass fire. Most of the floor in the building was also burned away indicating the house had been burning for some time before the fire was reported. The house was fully furnished, but vacant at the time of the fire. The homeowner suspected someone may have been living in the building periodically without permission. Firefighters worked for three hours to extinguish the fire and overhaul the scene. It appeared the fire may have started in the area of a kerosene heater inside the building. No injuries were reported. Before leaving the scene, firefighters used a deck gun to knock down the chimney and several unsafe walls to render the building safe. Water supply was provided by a Tender shuttle with units refilling at a chemical plant 2-1/2 miles from the scene.

Engine 2, Engine 6, Engine 21, Tender 2, Tender 6, Medic 6, Battalion 1 and Truck 12 responded. Firefighter-Paramedic David Goins served as Incident Commander.
