Colleton County Fire-Rescue

Stations 19 and 27 assisted Walterboro Public Safety with a house fire at 712 Wichman Street at 0114 Tuesday morning 16-March. While on patrol, a Walterboro Police Officer discovered heavy smoke coming from the older one story wood frame structure. Fire units arrived within minutes as flames began venting from the roof at the front and rear of the building. Firefighters deployed multiple handlines from two Engines to combat the fire. The balloon frame construction allowed flames to drop from the attic into the walls at several locations and extend into the basement, presenting some challenges for the crews. Most of the fire damage was contained to the attic and one room in the living area. Most items, including multiple antiques inside the structure were saved, however the interior suffered heat and water damage. Crews were on the scene for over five hours. One firefighter received minor injuries at the fire.

Walterboro Engine 1, Engine 2, Engine 3 and Fire-Rescue Medic 19, Medic 27, Truck 11, Truck 12 and Battalion 1 responded. Public Safety Assistant Chief Ken Dasen served as Incident Commander.
