Colleton County Fire-Rescue

3/19/2010

Friday evening 19-March kept units running with a report of an electrical fire in a residence at 955 Southern Charm Road in the Hudson Mill Community at 2021. Stations 4, 7, 18, 26 and Battalion 1 responded. While working to the Southern Charm incident, Stations 2 and 6 were dispatched to a woods fire off of Green Pond Highway near Sid’s Store in the Ritter Community at 2040. Callers to 9-1-1 advised they could see a large fire in the woods near this location. Engine 6 arrived reporting the same information with flames above the trees well back into the woods. Firefighters began searching for an alternate route to reach the fire and discovered it was actually a singlewide mobile home that was fully involved at 470 Nomad Lane. The alarm was upgraded to a structure fire. Nomad Lane is a narrow dirt road which runs off of Ritter Road approximately ½ mile from the reported initial location. The structure was located at the end of Nomad Lane. Engine 6 and Medic 6 found the mobile home already on the ground with several outside storage buildings on fire. Two 1-3/4 handlines and a booster line were used on the fires. Firefighters removed the metal roof to access the burning debris under the roof. Water supply was handled with a Tender Shuttle. One of the family’s dogs perished in the fire, but firefighters were able to rescue another dog that was chained inside a fence near the burning building. The cause of the fire is suspicious in origin and is under

investigation. The SLED Arson Unit and the Sheriff’s Office is assisting Fire-Rescue investigators with the case. No one was at home when the fire was reported. Firefighters removed the pet from the structure and buried the animal for the family. Shortly after the initial units arrived at Sid’s Store, an over-turned vehicle accident with entrapment was dispatched on Clover Hill Road near Wisteria Drive at 2053. Engine 2 was diverted to the vehicle accident and Medic 27 and Rescue 1 were assigned to the response. On arrival, Engine 2 advised the occupant was not entrapment, so Rescue 1 was cancelled. The patient suffered multiple traumatic injuries in the crash. Medic 27 treated the man at the scene and transported him directly to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston. A third structure fire (fourth for the shift) was received on Burlington Road at 2222.
