Colleton County Fire-Rescue

4/3/2010

Stations 1, 5, 19, 24 and 26 responded to a structure and woods fire on Calloh Drive at the intersection of Blevins Drive in the Lafayette Park Subdivision, Saturday afternoon 3-April at 1641. The woods fire had grown to cover approximately four acres before it was reported. The fire burned into several yards damaging a wooden privacy fence at one home, before igniting a storage building and a 25 foot conex container at a neighboring residence. Engine 19 found heavy smoke conditions in the locked conex container and the small 12 x 12 storage building was already destroyed. Firefighters used bolt cutters to cut a chain securing the metal door and one 1-3/4 handline to extinguish the fire inside the container. The unit was used for storage of machine parts, tools and lawn equipment, most of which was heavily damaged by the fire.

Other crews used booster lines from the Tenders to extinguish the fires behind the other homes. Tender 26 and Brush 24 responded to Cottonwood Lane behind the subdivision to attack the fire that was spreading toward a large field. A tractor from the Forestry Commission was also requested and responded. Firefighters used backpacks and flaps to work on the fire in the wooded area

that could not be reached with handlines. The Forestry tractor cut a fire line around the perimeter of the fire. The Forest Ranger is investigating the cause of the blaze.

Engine 5, Engine 19, Tender 1, Tender 5, Tender 19, Tender 26, Brush 24, Medic 19, Battalion 1 and Truck 12 responded. Firefighter-EMT-I Scott O’Quinn served as Incident Commander. The SC Forestry Commission responded a Tractor and brush unit.
