Colleton County Fire-Rescue

4/6/2010

Stations 5, 17, 19 and 26 responded to a report of a gasoline tanker on fire in the 11000 block of Augusta Highway at 1736, Tuesday afternoon 6-April. On arrival Engine 5 reported a well involved, tractor trailer tanker truck on fire, with several acres of woods also on fire. He noted it did not appear to be a gasoline tanker and the trailer had no placards. Engine 5 deployed one 1-3/4 handline for the trailer and a booster line to begin extinguishing the woods fire. Engine 26 arrived a short time later and deployed one 1-3/4 handline. Firefighters had most of the trailer fire knocked down in less than 10 minutes and then began cooling the 7000 gallon insulated trailer. The truck was found to be hauling a load of non-flammable, non-hazardous cleaning solvent (Rheosolve). The truck driver, who lives at the location had parked the vehicle near the highway. A fire on the neighboring property extended to his yard and burned under the truck, igniting the tires, which spread to the trailer. The trailer received heavy damage, but the tank was not breached. Augusta Highway was closed for about an hour while firefighters extinguished the fire and handled the woods fire. Units from the Forestry Commission also responded to assist with the woods fire. No one was injured in the incident.

Engine 5, Engine 19, Engine 26, Tender 5. Tender 17, Tender 19, Tender 26, Medic 19, Medic 26, ARFF 19, Battalion 1, Truck 12 and Truck 116 responded. Battalion Chief Dan Barb served as Incident Commander.
