Colleton County Fire-Rescue

5/16/2010

Stations 1, 12, 19, 24 and 27 responded to a house fire at 214 Hickory Street in the Hampton Drive Subdivision at 0124, Sunday morning 16-May. A neighbor at 212 Hickory Street told 9-1-1 operators that he was awakened by a loud popping sound. When he investigated he saw flames coming from the house next door. Engine 1 and Medic 27 arrived six minutes later to find heavy fire conditions in the single family dwelling. Firefighters deployed two handlines with one crew entering the building through the front door. They used a thermal imaging camera to search for occupants in the front two rooms but were driven out by the rapidly advancing flames. Command ordered an evacuation of the structure and began a defensive attack on the fire from the exterior. It took about 10 minutes before firefighters had enough of the fire knocked down before they could re-enter the building. A portion of the roof in the rear of the structure was burned away and the building was suffering from severe structural instability in an addition on the rear of the building. No one was found to be in the residence and it was later learned that the home had been unoccupied for about six months. The home contained a light fire load of furniture and appliances. Some personal belongings were still stored in the building.

Firefighters had the fire under control within about 25 minutes and were on the scene for three hours. The fire is believed to have been electrical in nature and started in a rear bedroom, spreading unchecked through the rear of the building into the attic. The front two rooms were spared fire damage but suffered heat, smoke and water damage. No injuries were reported. Water supply was provided by Tenders.

Engine 1, Engine 19, Tender 1, Tender 12, Tender 24, Medic 19, Medic 27, Battalion 1 and Car 12 responded. Battalion Chief Brent Dalton served as Incident Commander.
