Colleton County Fire-Rescue

10/02/2010

The City of Walterboro Fire Department celebrated 140 years of service Saturday 2-October, which kicked off Fire Prevention Week. The department started around 1880, which is the earliest documentation in City Hall minutes. That was about the time the department began operating from City Hall. Several retired members of the department were present including former Mayor Harry Cone who served as Fire Chief some 40 years ago. The event was held in the City Parking Lot downtown and featured a display of current city fire apparatus and the City’s 1930 American LaFrance Engine, which has been restored over the years by firefighters. Scout Troop 646 served hot dogs and children were entertained by a two story inflatable slide in the shape of a ladder truck. City units were on hand until around 1400 Saturday.
