“B” Shift – Fatal MVC with entrapment & air evacuation

Run # 10-05778 - A two car collision on Jefferies Highway has left one man dead and three others injured. Stations 1, 19 and 26 responded to the high speed MVC at the intersection of Jefferies Highway (US Hwy 15) and Industrial Road, north of Walterboro Friday afternoon 22-October at 1425.  The cars appeared to have collided head-on, after one vehicle pulled from the side street into the path of a northbound car. A witness to the MVC stopped to render aid. She found the driver of the Nissan Altima unconscious and not breathing. Bystanders removed the man from the car so they could perform CPR. Engine 19 and  Medic 19 arrived minutes later to take over the resuscitative efforts. CPR was continued while the man was immobilized, intubated and loaded into Medic 19. Firefighter-Paramedics applied a Lucas CPR Device and ALS procedures were performed. The efforts were continued during transport to Colleton Medical Center, where the man was later pronounced dead.

Two additional ambulances and Rescue 1 were assigned to the incident. The second vehicle, a Honda Passport, contained three occupants. The driver was trapped complaining of various injuries. The front seat female passenger received multiple traumatic injuries including a broken femur and arm. She was extricated with little difficulty with full C-spine immobilization. A medical helicopter was requested to transport her to a trauma center. Due to a delay, the patient was transported to Colleton Medical Center to meet Omniflight-Charleston at the helipad. She was flown to MUSC in Charleston. Firefighters extricated the male driver using Holmatro Rescue Tools. He was immobilized and treated at the scene before being transported to Colleton Medical Center. A four year old girl, who was secured in a child safety seat, received only minor injuries. She was also transported to CMC for evaluation.

Traffic at the busy intersection was detoured for an hour. Jefferies Highway was completely blocked south of the accident scene. The SC Highway Patrol and the Colleton County Coroner’s Office is investigating the crash.

Engine 19, Rescue 1, Medic 1, Medic 19, Medic 26, Battalion 1, Car 12 and Car 116 responded. Battalion Chief Marty Stallings served as Incident Commander.
