12/31/10 – “C” Shift – Structure Fire

Incident # 10-07039 – A Cottageville family has been displaced due to an early evening house fire north of Town that occurred at 2136, 31-December. The initial 9-1-1 call reported the fire was already burning through the roof. Engine 9 and Medic 9 arrived minutes later from Station # 9 located less than a mile away, to find the single story wood frame structure well involved, with flames extending out of the front and rear of the structure. The roof in the center of the home had already collapsed indicating it had been burning for quite some time before it was seen. Firefighters deployed three 1-3/4” handlines and one 2-1/2” handline to combat the flames. It took about 50 minutes to bring the fire under control. Units were on the scene for five hours performing overhaul and extinguishing hot spots. Some personal items were saved, but the family lost most of their belongings. The interior of the home suffered substantial damage. No one was at home when the fire occurred. The fire appears to have started in the area of the furnace, located near the center of the home. The Charleston Chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting the family.
