Colleton County Fire-Rescue

1/15/2011

Tactical Response Team members trained on hazardous materials mitigation on Saturday morning, January 22, 2011.  The drill commenced at 08:30 and involved a tractor trailer transporting Ethylene Oxide which was leaking.  As part of the drill, two firefighters became incapacitated and had to be rescued by Hazardous Materials Technicians wearing Level A chemical protective suits. The firefighters were put through a simulated emergency decontamination and delivered to awaiting Firefighter/Paramedics for treatment and transportation to definitive care.  The simulated leak was then identified using various air monitors and detection equipment.  The release was plotted using mapping software to determine areas surrounding the leak that were in the most danger and public protective actions were simulated.  Engine 19, Haz Mat 19, Medic 19, Engine 1, and Battalion 1 responded as part of the drill.  Battalion Chief Brent Dalton served as the drill’s incident commander.
