01/30/2011 – “C” Shift – MVC w/ejection & Air Evacuation

Incident # 11-00602 - A single car high speed MVC has left a Walterboro man in critical condition. Fire units were dispatched to Charleston Highway just west of Jacksonboro Road when an eastbound Range Rover traveling nearly 100 mph failed to negotiate a curve. The vehicle had just passed a Sheriff’s Deputy on a long straight portion of the highway. Before the Deputy could catch up with the vehicle, he found the car over-turned on the westbound lane. The SUV received heavy damage and left over 350 feet of debris as it over-turned multiple times. The unrestrained driver was ejected from the car and found unconscious in a grassy area near the woods. Engine 2 arrived several minutes to alert Medic 6 that the man was in critical condition. A medical helicopter was requested, with a LZ set up at the Jacksonboro Baptist Church about 1 mile from the scene. The patient was treated at the scene for multiple traumatic injuries, then transported to the LZ. The Omniflight-Lifestar helicopter crew RSIed the patient prior to flying him to the Trauma Canter at MUSC in Charleston. Traffic on Charleston Highway was rerouted for two hours while the Highway Patrol investigated the crash.

Engine 2, Medic 6, Battalion 1, Car 12 and Car 118 responded. Firefighter-EMT Brian Drew served as Incident Commander. Captain Scott Feather served as LZ Coordinator.
