02/18/2011 – “A” Shift – Camper/Grass/Vehicle Fire

Incident # 11-00953 – An electrical short caused a fire that destroyed a twenty foot camper Friday evening 18-February. At 22:01, 9-1-1 Operators received several reports of a large fire off the roadway in the 1900 block of Jefferies Highway. Callers reported hearing an explosion and reported two other buildings were endangered. Engine 19 arrived to find a fully involved camper down a long drive. The camper had been parked near a second structure on the property where it was receiving power. Two junk cars next to the camper were also burning along with approximately ¼ acre of grass. Firefighters deployed two 1-3/4 handlines to combat the fire and protect the exposure. Crews worked for about 10 minutes to contain the fire. The second building was not damaged. The third building was over 200 feet away and was not in danger. One vehicle received heavy fire damage, while the second vehicle received only minor damage. Fire units remained on the scene performing overhaul for 1-1/2 hours.

Engine 19, Engine 1, Tender 1, Tender 5, Tender 19, Tender 26, Medic 19, Battalion 1 and Car 12 responded. Battalion Chief Brent Dalton served as Incident Commander.
