03/15/2011 – “B” Shift – MVC with Air Evacuation

Incident # 11-01496 – A 25 year old man was seriously injured when his motorcycle collided with a car near the intersection of Dandridge Road and Hubbard Street. According to witnesses, the motorcycle driver was thrown from his bike and struck a metal fence. He was not wearing a helmet. Medic 26 and Engine 26 arrived to find the man lying in the ditch near the fence. He suffered a suspected head injury and other traumatic injuries. While being examined and treated, he became unconscious and stopped breathing. A medical helicopter was requested, before the patient was packaged. Firefighter-Paramedics immobilized the man, treated his injuries and assisted his respirations. He was transported to the Lowcountry Regional Airport to meet with the Omniflight-Charleston helicopter. Medic 26’s crew had to RSI the patient due to airway complications before the helicopter arrived. He was flown to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating to determine if alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash. No one in the car was injured.

Engine 26, Medic 26, ARFF 19, Battalion 1 and Car 12 responded. Firefighter-EMT Joseph Holmes served as Incident Commander. Firefighter-EMT-I Scott O’Quinn was LZ Coordinator.
