03/17/2011 – “A” Shift – Tractor Trailer Fire

Incident # 11-01528 – Stations 5, 17, 19 and 26 responded to a tractor trailer fire at Circle C Truck Stop located at 11109 Augusta Hwy Thursday afternoon 17-March at 12:59. Engine 5 arrived to find the front refrigeration unit on the produce trailer well involved. Heavy black smoke was coming from the roof and rear of the trailer as well. Additional fire units were requested. The truck had already disconnected from the trailer and was a safe distance away. Firefighters extinguished the refrigeration unit, but had access problems reaching the burning product and insulation in the front of the trailer. Crewmembers directed hose streams in from the burned out front of the trailer, laddered the unit and made attempts to reach the fire from the top. A firefighter crawled inside the trailer on top of the boxed strawberries and was able to direct a stream to the front of the trailer. The combined effort extinguished the fire. Firefighters remained on the scene for several hours.

Engine 5, Tender 26, Tender 17, Tender 19, Battalion 1, Car 116 responded. Battalion Chief Ben Heape served as Incident Commander.
