06/23/2011 – MVC with entrapment – “C” Shift

Incident # 11-03452 – A high speed single vehicle MVC in front of 24846 Augusta Highway sent two people to the hospital Thursday morning at 08:12. A small west bound Chevrolet Aveo was on Augusta Highway when it crossed the roadway on a straight portion of the road and went down an embankment on the eastbound side of the highway. The car struck a driveway culvert, became airborne and flipped end over end before coming to rest backwards lying on the passenger side . The car received heavy damage. Both occupants were wearing seatbelts, but were trapped in the wreckage. An off-duty City of Charleston firefighter drove up on the accident and began administering first aid to the patients. The driver was assisted out of the vehicle, but Firefighters had to use Holmatro Rescue Tools to remove the roof to extricate the female passenger. Both patients suffered non-life threatening traumatic injuries. They were treated at the scene and transported by Medic 9 to Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating to determine if alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash.

Engine 9, Engine 11, Medic 9, Rescue 1, Car 12, Car 116 and Car 118 responded. Captain Ethan Shider served as Incident Commander.
