28/July/2011 - Structure Fire – “B” Shift

Incident # 11-04167 – Firefighters were sent to 538 Bee Street in the Foxfield Subdivision at 13:38 Thursday afternoon 28-July. Engine 24 arrived six minutes later to report a doublewide mobile home 50% involved with flames through the roof. Firefighters deployed two 1-3/4 handlines and one 2-1/2 handline. Crews knocked down enough flames to enter the building through the front door located in the center of the structure. Two crews worked their way right and left to extinguish the flames. They were able to stop the spread of the fire, preserving two rooms, however the rooms received heavy damage. The remainder of the home was destroyed. Little to no personal belongings were saved. Neighbors noticed flames coming from the roof of the trailer and alerted 9-1-1. Firefighters endured afternoon temperatures in excess of 100 degrees. One firefighter was treated at the scene by his comrades and transported to Colleton Medical Center for heat exhaustion. He was released later in the evening. One neighbor and her children brought cold beverages and distributed them to exhausted crewmembers in the front yard.

The occupants were not at home when the fire occurred. The cause is still under investigation. The State Police (SLED) Arson Unit is assisting in the investigation.

Engine 2, Engine 19, Engine 24, Tender 1, Tender 12, Tender 19, Tender 32, Medic 1, Medic 19, Battalion 1, Car 12, Car 116 and Car 118 responded. Lt. Joseph Campbell served as Incident Commander.
