Incident # 11-04869 – An accident involving an oil lamp has sent one man to the Augusta Burn Center and caused damage to a mobile home. Fire-Rescue was notified of the incident at 20:19 Tuesday evening 6-September. Neighbors advised there was fire inside the residence. Engine 7 arrived a short time later noting smoke was coming from the front door and eaves, with fire visible through the front windows of the doublewide mobile home. The 67 year old occupant was standing near the road. According to the patient, he was carrying a lit oil lamp when he dropped it, breaking the container. This caused a small explosion which spread burning oil on the man and the immediate area in the room.  He received burns on his hands, face and throat. Firefighter-Paramedics treated the man at the scene, while another crew advanced one 1-3/4 handline into the residence. They quickly extinguished the fire in the living room, that burned approximately 30 square feet of carpet, a table and several chairs. A PPV fan was used to clear the smoke from the residence. Medic 18 rapidly transported the patient to Colleton Medical Center.

Once at the ED the patient was intubated due to burns in his airway and flown by the Lifenet 4 medical helicopter to the Still Burn Center in Augusta Georgia. Fire damage to the residence was contained to the living room, however the remainder of the home suffered smoke damage. Units were on the scene for an hour.
