09/08/2011 – MVC with Air Evacuation – “B” Shift

Incident # 11-04892 – A 71 year old man was critically injured when the moped he was riding collided with a medium duty Freightliner Utility Truck. The accident occurred in the 2500 block of Jefferies Highway at 12:13 Thursday afternoon 08-September. The moped impacted the side of the utility truck causing the man to slide underneath the large vehicle. The truck drove over the man before the driver was able to stop resulting in multiple traumatic injuries. Medic 19 and Engine 19 arrived to find the man still under the truck. He had tire tracks across his back. Firefighter-Paramedics held C spine control to allow the driver to pull the truck forward about ten feet so they could access the patient. Crewmembers immobilized the man and treated his multiple injuries.   A medical helicopter was requested. As his condition deteriorated, Medic 19’s crew with additional assistance from other Firefighter-Paramedics, stabilized the man at the scene with bleeding control, splinting of open fractures, multiple large bore IVs and pain medications.

He was transported to the helipad at Colleton Medical Center 2 miles away. The Medtrans-Meducare helicopter responded, then flew the patient to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston.

Engine 19, Medic 19, Battalion 1, Car 12 and Car 116 responded. Captain Scott Feather served as Incident Commander.
