11/12/2011 – Traumatic Injuries with Air Evacuation – “A” Shift

Incident # 11-06038 – A 48 year old man received multiple, life threatening injuries when a horse fell on him at a residence on Mount Carmel Road near McLeod Road Saturday evening 12-November. The accident was reported at 18:07 indicating a horse was attacking the man. It was later learned the horse fell on the patient. The man received multiple traumatic injuries, including head and chest injuries. Medic 26 arrived a short time after dispatch since the station is only a mile from the location. The patient was having extreme difficulty breathing due to a crushed chest. Firefighter-Paramedics quickly treated the man at the scene, securing his airway, immobilizing his injuries, controlling the bleeding, establishing multiple IVs and administering pain medications. A medical helicopter was alerted and Lifenet 4 was placed on standby at Colleton Medical Center. Medic 26 rapidly transported the man to the helipad at CMC. Prior to transferring him to the Flight Team, crewmembers decompressed the man’s chest to allow him to breathe. He was flown to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston.

Engine 26, Medic 26 and Car 12 responded. Firefighter-Paramedic Robert Gregory served as Incident Commander.
