11/26/2011 – Structure and Woods Fire – “C” Shift 

Incident # 11-06289 – A 100 year old barn was destroyed in an afternoon fire at 1510 Merrick Drive, Saturday 26-November. Fire-Rescue was notified of the building fire at 14:48. Engine 19 arrived several minutes later to find the fully involved 15 by 50 foot wooden barn, as well as an approximately 1-1/2 acre woods fire. Firefighters deployed several 1-3/4 handlines to combat the fire. Engine 9 set up north of the incident and deployed several handlines to head off the fast moving woods fire. A tractor from the Forestry Commission was requested. Crews worked for about 20 minutes to bring the fire under control, then spent another 40 minutes performing overhaul. The adjacent farm house was not damaged. The occupant advised they were inside the home when they heard an explosion. Upon investigating they discovered the barn was on fire. The old building was completely destroyed. The Forestry Tractor cut a fire line around the perimeter of the woods fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Engine 9, Engine 19, Tender 1, Tender 9, Tender, 19, Tender 27, Medic 9, Medic 19, Battalion 1 and Car 12 responded. Battalion Chief Dan Barb served as Incident Commander.
