01/15/2012 – Structure/Woods Fires – “B” shift

Incident # 12-00283 – At 11:55, Fire-Rescue was notified of a woods fire threatening a structure at 2614 Peniel Road. Engine 1 and Medic 1 responded and found a 1 acre woods/grass fire that was burning under a mobile home on the property. The fire had already damaged the plastic under-skirting around the mobile home and entered the woods near the structure. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire at the home, then worked to extinguish the woods fire. A Forestry Tractor was requested, but later canceled. The fire originated from an unattended burn barrel on the property. Light winds caused embers from the burning barrel to ignite nearby grass, which spread through the yard.

Engine 1, Medic 1 and Car 111 responded. Firefighter/Paramedic Bryan Eadon served as Incident Commander.

Incident 00287 - A second burn barrel incident occurred at 401 Quail Drive at 12:31 when embers from the barrel ignited grass and several stacks of truck tires behind a garage. The wind caused the fire to spread through the yard until it reached a 28 foot camper stored on the property. Firefighters arrived to find the large camper fully involved and the garage being threatened. One 1-3/4 handline was deployed to protect the garage, while a second handline and booster line was used to extinguish the tires and camper. Firefighters were successful in saving the garage, but the tires and camper were destroyed. Units were on the scene for approximately 1-1/2 hours.

Engine 19, Engine 24, Tender 1, Tender 19, Medic 9, Medic 19 and Car 119 responded. Firefighter-EMT-I James Varnadoe served as Incident Commander.
