02/04/2012 – Vehicle Extrication Seminar

Fire-Rescue hosted a one day seminar on New Vehicle Technology and operating with a short staffed crew, Saturday 04-Februaury at Station # 19. The course was taught by Mr. Aaron Heller of On Scene Training in New Jersey and Mr. Carl Haddon of Five Star Training of Idaho. The first three hour segment provided information on operations involving a short staffed crew; the roles and responsibilities of each team member and how to efficiently accomplish the tasks. The second portion covered an overview of new technology in the construction of newer vehicles, the types of stronger metals and construction techniques. Mr. Haddon, who has worked closely with Volvo of North American and NASCAR, brought a great deal of information to the table to enlighten students on new car concepts and dismantling techniques for rescuers. He also covered a brief segment on electric vehicles.

The course was attended by 57 personnel from ten departments, including Ashley River Fire Dept, Berkeley County Rescue, City of Charleston Fire Department, Colleton County Fire-Rescue, Dorchester County Fire-Rescue, Goose Creek City Fire Department, Lake Moultrie Fire Department, Lexington County Fire Department, Reevesville Fire Department and Whitesville Fire Department.

Course Description: EXTRICATION FOR THE SHORT-STAFFED CREW

This interactive presentation addresses the difficulties faced by companies staffed by 3 or less firefighters when dealing with motor vehicle extrications. It will define a short-staffed crew. Although we do not advocate short staffing, we know this is the norm across the country. This program’s goal is to provide the target audience of chiefs, officers, and firefighters with many operational suggestions that will make an immediate positive impact on the safety of their crews and patients.

Course Description: ADVANCED NEW VEHICLE TECHNOLOGY EXTRICATION

This presentation provides the rescuer with the most up-to-date information regarding metallurgy challenges, new vehicle components, safety systems, and the newest and most successful extrication techniques. This program will provide attendees with the knowledge necessary to immediately operate more efficiently and safely at incidents involving New Vehicle Technology.
