03/10/2012 - MVC with Air Evacuation - "C" Shift

Incident # 12-01342- A single vehicle MVC occurred on a very remote stretch of Parkers Ferry Road Saturday evening 10-March. The accident was reported at 20:20 advising of an over-turned vehicle with a person ejected. The dirt road is 12 miles long, located in an isolated area, that runs through Westvaco tree farms between Cottageville and Jacksonboro. The car lost control and flipped over at least once, coming to rest on its wheels. The 20 year old driver was ejected and found lying in the roadway about eight feet from the car. He received multiple traumatic injuries, but was conscious.

The passenger received non-life threatening traumatic injuries. He was able to exit the vehicle and crawl to his friend's side until Rescuers arrived.

It took a while to reach them due to the isolated area and the condition of the dirt road. There are no residents for several miles in any direction.

Both patients were treated and immobilized at the scene. The driver received pain medications prior to an during transport. He was transported by Medic 6 to the Cottageville Elementary School to meet with Lifenet 4. He was transferred to the helicopter who flew the patient to the Trauma Center at MUSC. The passenger was transported in Medic 9 to Colleton Medical Center.

The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Engine 9, Medic 6, Medic 9, Battalion 1 and Car 12 responded. Lt. Andy Sahlmann served as Incident Commander.
