3/27/2012 – Tactical Response Team Training

The training division conducted one of the quarterly Tactical Response Team training sessions on Tuesday, March 27, 2012.  Two training sessions occurred, one at 09:00 and one at 18:00.  The topic of the training was Confined Space Rescue.  Personnel reviewed confined space directives and then conducted an exercise involving an actual confined space inside a building in the industrial area that is currently vacant.  The exercise involved a mannequin being used to simulate a victim that was trapped underneath the floor in a horizontal ventilation shaft.

Personnel were able to conduct air monitoring inside the space using a wireless remote monitoring station, then conducted ventilation of the space.  Next, two entrants dressed in Class III harnesses along with two other personnel who acted as a rapid intervention team.  An air supply was established using a supplied air breathing apparatus (air-cart) and a tripod with associated rope rigging was setup over the space to accommodate tag lines for the entrants and a haul line to remove the simulated victim.

Despite slight differences in the overall rigging setup, both exercises took exactly 30 minutes from the first entrant going “on air” to the last entrant coming “off air.”  CCFR’s tactical response team is responsible for handling low frequency, high risk incidents such as Confined Space, Hazardous Materials Responses, Weapons of Mass Destruction Incidents, Water Rescue, and High/Low Angle Rescues.
