28/November/2012 – Structure Fire – “B” Shift

Incident # 12-06482 - Two Smoak’s residents lost their home to a late night fire Wednesday evening 28-November at 23:44. They were awakened by their smoke alarms to discover a fire on the “B” side of their mobile home located at 96 Southard Lane east of the Town of Smoaks. The husband and wife were able to exit the home safely and went to a neighbor’s house to call 9-1-1. When Engine 18 arrived, the singlewide mobile home was fully involved. Crews deployed multiple handlines to bring the fire under control. Firefighters stopped the fire on the “D” side of the building, but the interior was completely gutted. The family lost most of their belongings in the fire. Units were on the scene for over two hours. The Charleston Chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting the family who has no insurance. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

This is the second family within the last three days who was saved by working smoke alarms in their homes. Residents are reminded to check their smoke alarms often and change the batteries twice a year.  Most people die in house fires due to smoke inhalation. Smoke alarms provide early warning to the presence of dangerous smoke in the home. The inexpensive devices can be purchased at most department or hardware stores.

Engine 18, Tender 7, Tender 23, Tender 26, Medic 18, Battalion 1 and Car 12 responded.
