15/February/2013 – MVC with Air Evacuation – “C” Shift

Incident # 13-00837 – A two vehicle accident on Interstate 95 resulted in five patients being transported to Colleton Medical Center and one patient later being flown from the ED to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston. An earlier accident in Dorchester County blocked the northbound lanes of I-95. Law Enforcement and SCDOT rerouted traffic at Exit 68/Augusta Highway (SC Hwy 61) over to Jefferies Highway (US Hwy 15) in an effort to move the traffic. The northbound lanes were closed for several hours resulting in northbound traffic backing up for over ten miles. At 13:04, 9-1-1 received several reports of an accident at the 62 mile marker NB with multiple injuries. Engine 26, Medic 19, Medic 26 and Battalion 1 were assigned to the incident. They arrived to find a small car that had collided with the back of a MC306 gasoline tanker. The car received heavy front end damage, but the tractor trailer only received minor rear end damage. There was no leak from the trailer. The patients were treated at the scene and transported to Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro.

Medic 6 was assigned to the incident due to the fifth stretcher patient. Shortly after arriving at the ED, one of the patient’s condition began to deteriorate. The patient was flown from the by LifeNet 4 to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Engine 26, Medic 6, Medic 19, Medic 26 and Battalion 1 responded. Battalion Chief Dan Barb served as Incident Commander.
