10/March/2013 – MVC with Air Evacuation – “B” Shift    

Incident # 13-01245 – An adult male was critically injured when his motorcycle collided head-on with a car in the 1800 block of Bells Highway. The east bound motorcycle struck the front of a vehicle that was exiting a restaurant, ejecting the motorcycle’s driver. He received multiple traumatic injuries, including a severe leg injury. He was not wearing a helmet. Firefighter-Paramedics quickly treated his injuries at the scene, immobilized him and rapidly transported him to the helipad at Colleton Medical Center only blocks away. LifeNet 4, stationed at CMC, had been placed on standby and had the helicopter running when Medic 26 arrived. The Flight Crew provided additional treatment before the patient was transferred to the helicopter. He was flown to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston where he remained in critical condition. Walterboro Public Safety is investigating the crash. Traffic on the busy Bells Highway was detoured for about 45 minutes.

Engine 26, Medic 26, Battalion 1, Car 12 and Walterboro Engine 2 responded. Battalion Chief Ben Heape served as Incident Commander.
