Colleton County Fire-Rescue
03/April/2013 – MVC with entrapment – Two Fatalities – “B” Shift
Incident # 13- 01765 – Units from Colleton and Dorchester Counties responded to a three vehicle, high speed MVC on US Hwy 17-A east of Cottageville, Wednesday night 03-April at 22:03. The accident was originally reported to be in Colleton County at the Colleton/Dorchester County line at the Edisto River. The actual location was approximately one mile into Dorchester County at Sullivan’s Landing Road. Apparently a west bound Honda collided head-on with an east bound KIA SUV, causing extensive damage to both vehicles. The KIA was thrown into a west bound Toyota 4runner. The two occupants of the Honda were not wearing seatbelts and were heavily entrapped in the wreckage. Initial calls to 9-1-1 reported that neither occupant of the Honda was breathing. The two occupants of the KIA suffered various traumatic injuries, but the driver of the 4runner was not injured. Dorchester EMS Paramedics notified the Dorchester County Coroner’s Office of the deceased patients and then transported one patient from the KIA to the Trauma Center at MUSC.
A second patient from the KIA was transported by Colleton Fire-Rescue Medic 9 to Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro with non-life threatening injuries. After the Coroner’s Office arrived and completed their investigation, Firefighters from the Sandhill and Old Fort Fire Departments used hydraulic rescue tools to remove the Honda’s doors and roof. A hydraulic ram was used to move the dash off of the driver. The Coroner’s Office transported both patients. Traffic on US Hwy 17-A was blocked for 2-1/2 hours. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Deputies from Colleton and Dorchester Counties assisted with traffic detours.
Engine 9, Medic 9, Rescue 1, Battalion 1, Car 118 and Car 12 responded. Old Fort and Sandhill Fire Departments responded.
