25/May/2013 – Structure & Woods Fire – “C” Shift

Incident # 13-02783 – A rekindled debris fire is the suspected cause of a woods fire that destroyed a mobile home on Duck Hollow Road Saturday afternoon 25-May at 14:45. Fire-Rescue units were dispatched to 4888 Sniders Highway for the report of a building being on fire next to this address. Engine 1 arrived to discover the fire was actually behind this location on Duck Hollow Road, a narrow rural dirt road which is not visible from the highway. Firefighters found a singlewide mobile home completely destroyed. The only thing left was the metal roof which covered the still burning embers, indicating the fire had been burning for some time before it was noticed. Several utility trailers were also on fire, as well as miscellaneous stored items and approximately 2 acres of woods and brush. Firefighters stopped the advance of the fire from reaching three other buildings, a tractor and a pickup truck on the property. A Fire Plow from the Forestry Commission was also requested. Firefighters used two 1-3/4 handlines to combat the fire.

The Forestry Tractor cut a fire line around the parameter of the fire.  Several attempts were made using a winch to remove the metal roof from the burned mobile home. However the metal began to tear preventing its removal. The Forestry Tractor was then used to push the metal aside so the remaining fire could be extinguished. Units were on the scene for over two hours. Water supply was conducted with Tenders. It was reported the land owner had been clearing the property several days earlier and had several debris pile fires. The fire had been extinguished, but apparently the light winds Saturday rekindled one of the fires, spreading the flames into brush on the property. No injuries were reported.

Engine 1, Engine 8, Tender 1, Tender 4, Tender 8, Tender 26, Brush 8, Battalion 1, Car 12 and Car 118 responded. Firefighter-EMT Cody Hutto served as Incident Commander.
