Incident # 13-03414 – A 31 year old Georgia man received multiple traumatic injuries after his small SUV collided with a tractor trailer on ACE Basin Parkway near Stocks Creek Road Monday morning 24-June. At 09:32, Fire-Rescue was notified of the accident. The southbound  GMC Envoy apparently crossed the centerline. The northbound tractor trailer truck took an evasive maneuver to avoid a head-on crash, but the car impacted the rear wheels on the cab, then drove partially underneath the truck impacting the rear tires. The SUV received heavy damage and broke the rear axles from the trailer. The truck driver was not injured. The SUV driver said he was not wearing a seatbelt. He broke the steering column completely in half and impacted the windshield. Firefighter-Paramedics treated him at the scene, immobilized him to a spine board and requested a medical helicopter to transport him to a Trauma Center. The highway was completely blocked by the wreckage, so a Landing Zone was established on the highway south of the collision site. The LifeNet 4 medical helicopter based in Walterboro responded.

The patient was transferred to the Flight Crew without incident, then flown to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston. The SC Highway Patrol and the State Transport Police are investigating the crash. The Colleton County Sheriff’s Office diverting traffic on ACE Basin Parkway which was backed up for several miles in both direction. Crews from Lane’s Construction Company help clear the debris from the highway as the recovery crews removed the vehicles. Units were on the scene for over an hour.
