24/October/2013 – MVC with Air Evacuation – “B” Shift

Incident # 13-05803 – A 62 year old man suffered multiple traumatic injuries after his pickup truck collided head-on with a tractor trailer in the 17600 block of Sniders Highway near Dopson Road. A BOLO had just been issued to Sheriff’s Deputies over the radio for a vehicle that was driving erratically matching the description of the pickup truck. The east bound pickup truck collided head-on with a west bound Kenworth, knocking the front axle off of the tractor trailer. Both vehicles suffered heavy damage. A Personal Care Private Ambulance drove up on the accident and began providing care for the patients. Engine 15 arrived minutes later. Firefighters were able to force open the passenger door on the pickup truck to gain access to the driver. Firefighter-Paramedics treated his injuries before extricating him on a long spine board. A medical helicopter was requested, as crew members continued to provide medical care, which included splinting, multiple IVs and pain medications. A second Fire-Rescue ambulance was called for the tractor trailer driver, who also suffered multiple traumatic injuries. The pickup truck driver was transported to the baseball field on Moselle Road, then transferred to the LifeNet 4 Flight Crew. He was flown to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston. The Tractor Trailer driver was treated by Medic 1, then transported to Colleton Medical Center. His injuries were not life threatening.

Sniders Highway was closed in the area of the accident for two hours due to a large amount of diesel fuel on the roadway. Both saddle tanks were breached, spilling their loads. A SCDOT sand truck responded to the scene to assist with making the road safe. Representatives from DHEC, the State Transport Police and the SC Highway Patrol also responded. Engine 23 operated the landing zone sector.

Engine 15, Engine 23, Rescue 1, Medic 1, Medic 18, Battalion 1, Car 105, Rescue 18 and Car 118 responded.  Captain Matt Williams was Incident Commander.
