14/May/2014 – High Speed MVC with Air Evac – “C” Shift

Incident # 14-02947 – A 62 year old Florida woman received critical traumatic injuries in a single car crash on I-95 near the 48 mile marker northbound Wednesday afternoon 14-May at 17:06. It appeared the car went off of the right shoulder, then over-corrected before entering the median and striking the cable barrier at a high rate of speed. The small car received heavy damage. The occupant of the car suffered multiple traumatic injuries. Firefighter-Paramedics requested a medical helicopter, then used the Holmatro Rescue Tools from Engine 13 to remove two doors from the vehicle to access the patient. She was immobilized and extricated from the Hyundai Accent with full spinal precautions. Her condition rapidly deteriorated on scene. LifeNet 4 arrived quickly and made a scene landing approximately 1/8 mile north of the accident. Northbound traffic was stopped while the helicopter was on the ground. The patient was transferred to the flight crew without incident and flown to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Sheriff’s Deputies assisted with traffic as cars backed up four miles.

Engine 13, Medic 13, Battalion 1 and Car 12 responded. Firefighter-EMT Marshall Murdaugh served as Incident Commander.
