26/October/2014 – MVC with entrapment & Air Evac – “C” Shift

Incident # 14-06286 – A single vehicle MVC on I-95 near the 54 mile marker NB, sent three people to the hospital Sunday afternoon 26-Ocotber. At 13:47, the accident was reported after a small Buick left the roadway and entered the wooded median. The vehicle struck several trees causing heavy damage. A rear passenger suffered multiple traumatic injuries, with bystanders advising he was unconscious following the accident. The driver, who suffered minor injuries was trapped in the wreckage. Firefighter-Paramedics requested one additional ambulance and LifeNet 4 to be placed on standby. Firefighters used Holmatro Rescue Tools to remove the driver’s door. The female driver was able to ambulate from the car once she was freed. Crews treated and immobilized the male passenger in the rear seat. He was transported by Medic 1 to the helipad at Colleton Medical Center to meet with the medical helicopter stationed there. LifeNet 4 flew the man to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston. The two adult females were transported by Medic 19 to Colleton Medical Center. Both were later released. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Engine 1, Medic 1, Medic 19, Rescue 1 and Battalion 1 responded. Battalion Chief Ben Heape served as Incident Commander.
