08/November/2014 – MVC, Double Entrapment with Air Evac – “A” Shift

Incident # 14-06551 – A high speed head on collision resulted in two adult females receiving multiple traumatic injuries and one was flown to the Trauma Center. At 17:05 Saturday afternoon 08-November, Fire-Rescue was notified of the accident on Bells Hwy (SC Hwy 64) just west of McClure Lane. An east bound Honda Accord collided with a west bound Dodge Dakota resulting in heavy damage to both vehicles. The drivers of each vehicle were trapped in the wreckage. Firefighter-Paramedics arrived to find the highway blocked by the cars and the debris. A second ambulance was requested and LifeNet 4 was placed on standby at Colleton Medical Center. The driver of the pickup truck was found unconscious. Crews used three sets of Holmatro Rescue Tools to perform both extrications simultaneously. Firefighter-Paramedics treated both patients during the extrication process, including IVs, pain management and they were removed with spinal precautions. Medic 1 transported a 53 year old female to Colleton Medical Center’s ED. Medic 26 transported a 55 year old female to the helipad at CMC to meet with LifeNet 4. The patient was flown to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. The Colleton County Sheriff’s Office rerouted traffic for 1-1/2 hours.

Engine 26, Medic 1, Medic 26, Rescue 1, Battalion 1, Car 12 and Car 118 responded. Battalion Chief Dan Barb served as Incident Commander.
