19/November/2014 - Structure Fire – “B” Shift

Incident # 14-06752 – A Cottageville home was heavily damaged in an early morning fire Wednesday morning 19-November. At 02:59, 9-1-1 was notified of the fire in the roof of a single family dwelling located at 18 Locomotive Lane north of Cottageville. Engine 9 arrived to find heavy smoke conditions from the doublewide mobile home with flames visible from the rear of the structure. The home owner was on the roof in below freezing temperatures attempting to douse the flames with a garden hose. Firefighters made entry through the front door with two 1-3/4 hand lines. There was little smoke inside the residence. The fire originated near the chimney and burned a portion of the roof away. The fire spread through the void space between the living area and the roof. Firefighters had to pull the ceiling down in a quarter of the structure to reach and extinguish the flames. All of the fire damage was in this area, but the about half the home suffered water damage. Firefighters spread tarps over many furnishings in an attempt to protect them from water. Many personal items were saved, but the family of three adults and three children were displaced. The American Red Cross is assisting the family.

Engine 9, Engine 19, Tender 2, Tender 5, Tender 19, Tender 27, Medic 9, Medic 19, Battalion 1 and Car 12 responded. Battalion Chief Brent Dalton served as Incident Commander.
