20/December/2014 – MVC with Ejection – “C” Shift

Incident # 14-07393 – A 20 year old man was critically injured in a single vehicle MVC near the 13000 block of Bennetts Point Road, Saturday morning 20-December. The accident was reported at 06:16 when a motorist drove up on the vehicle in the roadway. Apparently the southbound pickup truck struck a deer in a curve, then lost control, left the roadway and hit several trees. The driver, who was the only occupant, was ejected and was found unconscious behind the truck. He suffered multiple traumatic injuries including a head injury. Firefighters from Station 21 arrived first and began assisting the man. Medic 6 had an extended response time due to the distance to Bennett’s Point. All area medical helicopters were grounded due to poor weather conditions. Firefighter-Paramedics treated and immobilized the man at the scene. They had to RSI the patient to secure his airway. He was then transported 45 miles to the Trauma Center at MUSC in Charleston with two additional Firefighter-Paramedics assisting with patient care. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Engine 2, Engine 21, Medic 6, Brush 2, Battalion 1, Car 12 and Car 118 responded. Firefighter-EMT Justin Benton served as Incident Commander.
