19/August/2015 – Fatal MVC with Double Entrapment – “B” Shift

Incident # 15-04768 – An early morning, two car accident in the 8900 block of Charleston Highway (SC Hwy 64) claimed the life of a 51 year old man and critically injured a 27 year old Walterboro woman. The accident was reported at 05:49, Wednesday morning 19-August just east of Featherbed Road (Neyles Crossroads). Apparently a west bound 2008 Impala lost control in a curve and began sliding sideways. The Impala was struck in the driver’s side by an east bound Pontiac Bonneville. The 51 year old male driver of the Pontiac was heavily entrapment and was deceased when Fire-Rescue arrived. The driver of the Impala was critically injured and was also trapped in her vehicle. Both car received extensive damage. Colleton County Firefighter-Paramedics extricated the woman using Holmatro Rescue tools. She was treated during the extrication, then transported directly to the Trauma Center at MUSC by Fire-Rescue Medic 6. The entire highway was blocked by the wreckage of the two cars and remained closed for nearly five hours, while the Coroner’s Office and SC Hwy Patrol conducted their investigations. Firefighters and SCDOT rerouted traffic around the area to Cottageville Hwy (US Hwy 17-A). Once the investigations were completed, Firefighters extricated the driver of the Pontiac. He was transported by the Coroner’s Office.

Engine 12, Engine 27, Rescue 1, Medic 6, Medic 19, Battalion 1, Car 12, Car 107 and Car 118 responded. Battalion Chief Brent Dalton served as Incident Commander.
