11/October/2015 – Fatal MVC w/entrapment – “A” Shift

Incident # 15-05891 - A 38 year old Ruffin man died from injuries he received in a single vehicle accident in the 6800 block of Mount Carmel Road Sunday morning 11-October. Fire-Rescue was notified of the MVC at 03:43. Firefighter-Paramedics arrived to find a 2008 Chevrolet Pickup over-turned in the east bound lane.  The truck received heavy damage after it struck a tree. It appeared the truck was west bound, when it dropped off of the roadway and over-corrected. The truck spun backwards, crossed the east bound ditch and struck a large pine tree, then over-turned. There was approximately 1 foot of intrusion into the cab.  The driver was already out of the vehicle and walking around the scene. The front seat passenger was entrapped and partially ejected from the truck. The passenger had no signs of life. The driver was treated at the scene, then transported to Colleton Medical Center. The Coroner’s Office was notified and responded to the scene. After Coroner Harvey completed his investigation, crews used Holmatro Rescue tools to force open the passenger side door and free the passenger. The Coroner’s Office transported him to MUSC. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. MAIT responded and mapped out the scene. The road was closed to traffic for five hours until MAIT completed its scene investigation.

Engine 26, Medic 26, Rescue 1, Battalion 1 and Car 12 responded. Firefighter-Paramedic David Drawdy served as Incident Commander.
