22/October/2015 – Fatal MVC with Entrapment – “A” Shift

Incident # 15-06157 - A 45 year old Walterboro man died from injuries he received after being struck by car involved in a separate collision. The accident was reported Thursday afternoon 22-October at 13:48 at the intersection of Robertson Blvd and Rivers Street. Not much information about the accident was provided. Firefighter-Paramedics arrived minutes later to find one car down an embankment, one vehicle laying on its side with two people trapped inside and a male pedestrian lying on the ground near the over-turned car. The man had no signs of life. Crews, requested a rescue truck and two additional ambulances, as they began treating the injured. It appeared the two cars collided in the intersection. As a north bound Pontiac spun around and began to flip over, it is believed the car struck the pedestrian who was walking or standing near the intersection. The Coroner’s Office was notified and responded to the scene. Firefighters stabilized the over-turned car with cribbing and jacks. The windshield was removed so the patients could be quickly evaluated. Firefighters used Holmatro Rescue Tools to remove the roof of the car to extricate the two adult female patients. Both patients were extricated with full spinal precautions. The driver of the other car received minor injuries. She was ambulatory at the scene. All three patients were transported to Colleton Medical Center.

State Troopers contacted their MAIT Team to investigate the accident. Robertson Blvd and Rivers Street were both closed for nearly four hours while investigators mapped and investigated the accident scene. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Engine 1, Rescue 1, Medic 1, Medic 9, Medic 19, Battalion 1, Car 12, Car 105 and Car 110 responded. Deputy Chief David Greene served as Incident Commander.
