27/November/2015 – Mutual Aid Fire to City of Walterboro – “A” Shift

Incident # 15-06937 – Stations 1 and 19 responded as mutual aid to a gas main break with a fire in the 200 block of Leith Lane, Friday evening 27-November. At 18:25, WFD requested mutual aid from Fire-Rescue for personnel. City firefighters had been on scene for approximately 20 minutes. A two inch plastic gas main was damaged, possibility from someone burning trash in the ditch, in front of Lucas Trailer Park. Flames were jettisoned 30 feet into the air and endangering two mobile homes. WFD Engine 3 had deployed three 1-3/4 handlines to protect the exposures. Firefighters directed handlines on the mobile homes and items in the yards. The residents were moved from the mobile homes until the gas line was secured. Crews were on the scene for nearly two hours. One mobile home suffered minor heat damage. SCE&G gas crews were able to secure a valve on one end of the line near Jefferies Blvd, but had to dig a hole behind the Asten Johnston factory and crimp the other end to stop the flow of gas. No injuries were reported and Leith Lane was closed to traffic for three hours.

Colleton Engine 19, Medic 1, Medic 19, Battalion 1 and Car 12 responded. WFD Engine 1, Engine 2, Engine 3 and Ladder 1 responded. Darren Vaughn served as Incident Commander.
